First Impressions

Perceptions of Rotary and an individual club start from initial contact wherever and however this is made. So positive use of up to date branding material and use of active Rotary stories will help. We sometimes oversell our clubs and when someone turns up it may not be what they thought it might be, so be honest and if someone says it’s not for them then point them in the direction of another club (including an online club) or consider starting a new club or group to meet their needs.

Invitation to join

Once someone has expressed an interest in joining Rotary (or perhaps even before) they should be assigned a mentor. Consider what they need to know and when and build it into a programme of communication and information. The membership application process should be simple and transparent. It will inevitably be different for direct membership to an existing club or for membership of a Satellite or traditional new club formation. The forms we use have been updated recently to reflect these variations.

Guiding new members

We have recently updated the on-line training programme for Mentoring and it is available on the RI Learning Centre.

Not quite the right fit

Sadly many new members leave a club within the first 2 years. The reasons for this will vary but if someone, unfortunately, does leave do try and find out why. We can all learn from feedback and you never know you might be able to guide them to another Rotary opportunity.
